Will My Pest Control Treatment Work If It’s Applied During a Texas Rain Storm?

This is a question we get all the time, the quick answer is that wet weather treatments can be just as effective as dry weather treatments. In fact in many cases a wet weather treatment can even be more effective. For Example Steve Cisneros, one of the owners of Berrett Pest Control, prefers his home in Allen, TX to be treated in wet weather conditions. Let me take a second and explain why.

First, we need to explain what is involved in both a typical dry weather treatment and a typical wet weather treatment.

Typical Dry Weather Treatments

- Inspection of home and property
- Sweeping of eaves for spider webs and wasp nests
- 4-6 feet barrier power sprayed around foundation of home
- Spraying of entry points i.e. doorways and window sills
- Wall injection, insecticidal dust is injected into weep holes and other cracks
- Spot treat the yard as necessary for fire ants or other bugs
- Power spray perimeter fence line

Again this is a typical treatment; however since every home is different, your home may maybe treated differently depending on specific issues concerning your home.

Typical Wet Weather Treatments

- Inspection of home and property
- Sweeping of eaves for spider webs and wasps nests
- 1-2 feet barrier sprayed around foundation of home
- 4-10 feet barrier granulated around foundation of home
- Spraying of entry points i.e. doorways and window sills
- Wall injection, insecticidal dust is injected into weep holes and other cracks
- Spot treat yard as necessary for fire ants or other bugs
- Granulate around  perimeter fence line

You can see that the two typical treatments are almost identical, so why does the owner like his home treated in wet weather? There are a few reasons, first bugs flee from the yard during heavy rains and seek out shelter. They can usually find shelter in cracks and crevices around the home which is exactly where the insecticidal dust is injected. Second, many insects live under a layer of grass clippings called thatch in the yard. One of the reasons we power spray is to help penetrate this layer of thatch. However, granules (which are activated by water and need water to be effective) are able to penetrate through the thatch into the soil where ants, earwigs, roaches, and other bugs like to nest.

There are exceptions of course if your yard is flooded or has 6 inches of snow on it than its safe to say that your home doesn’t need to be treated on that day. On the other hand, moisture can invite bugs therefore, as soon as the yard dries up a treatment would be recommended.

Do I Need a Rodent Exclusion Service in Dallas

The short answer for most homeowners in Texas is YES! To find out for sure if you need it at your house call us at 214-242-4800 or  vistit our website and send us a message.

What Drives the Rodents inside?

Like people, small animals seek an escape from the freezing temperatures this time of year. Some of the most common rodents and small animals here in Texas include field mice, roof rats,  norway rats, squirrels, opossums, and skunks. Field mice are notorious for nesting in garages and then slowly working their way into the home in the search for food and water. While rats and especially roof rats find their way into attics and other wall voids in the most peculiar ways. We’ve seen rats travel across telephone wires, up rain gutters, into weep holes, A/C conduit lines, up vines and lattice into small gaps between the eaves and siding and many other areas. Rats only need a 1/2  inch hole to enter a home or the size of a quarter while mice only need a 1/4 inch hole or the size of a dime. Berrett Pest Control offers a rodent exclusion service that seals these entry points and excludes rodents and other small animals from entering your home. Below are some pictures of an entry point around an A/C conduit line.

You can see there was a large gap where the A/C line entered the wall. In fact this home actually had a small family of opossums living in the attic.

As you can see no small animal will be able to enter that whole again.

What does an exclusion service entail?

The exclusion process is different at every home, which is why we recommend a free assesment by one of our wildlife experts. The assesment will include information about the following:

  • Entry point locations
  • Nesting sites
  • Exclusion recommendations
  • Bait or trapping recommendations
  • Pricing

Berrett Pest Control has been servicing homes in Texas with rodent and small animals infestations for over 10 years and has over 50 years of experience amoung the technical advisory board.  If you have any questions or would like to receive your free assesment please feel free to call us at 214-242-4800 or visit our website to send us a message.

A few thoughts on Fire Ants in Texas

We all love Fall. The changing colors, the cooler weather and the much needed rain for this North Texas area. As we all know, when the rains come so do the Fire Ants. Our phones have been ringing off the hook about ants and all the havoc they bring with them. I figured I would spend a few posts talking about some different types of ants and how to deal with them. The most common ant Berrett Pest Control deals with is Fire Ants. They are not hard to miss because we can all see that big dirt mound piling up in our yard for all to see, or the pain we feel when we step onto the mound. In fact, the other day I walked by a very small park and counted at least thirty Fire Ant mounds in this tiny park, not very fun for kids. Well, what do we do about these pesky Fire Ants?

First of all, lets separate myth from reality. Everyone has their own home remedy that they say gets rid of Fire Ants.  In fact, an elderly women called our office the other day just to give us some advice on how to treat for Fire Ants. She was very sweet and it was great to talk to her about ants, but her remedy was to just pour hot water on the mound and viola, they’re gone.  We have heard everything from pouring gasoline, club soda, and even syrup onto the mound to control them.  While they may all temporarily slow down or even move the colony, they will not help in ridding your home of them. They are here to stay, so the real question is how do we control them?

Berrett Pest Control uses several different methods to help control unwanted Fire Ants. The first is to treat each mound individually as they come up. This can be tedious at times because it requires each mound to be found and treated one by one. The other way is to apply a broad spectrum granule in the yard to help treat a larger area and at the same time leave behind some residual to help control any future Fire Ants that may try and surface.  Most granules will give you a couple months of control and may still be somewhat time consuming, however it is much easier than treating them as they come. The best way that Berrett has found to control these Fire Ants is with a product called Top Choice, for prices contact Berrett at 214-242-4800 or visit our website. The manufacturer has stated that this product gives a full 12 months control from Fire Ants in a yard.  I have personally used this product on my home and have found it to be true. The cost is a little more but well worth it to have the peace of mind of having them out of your yard for a year, especially if you have children (which I do).  Again, a little bit more money but requires so much less time and effort over the year.

I hope this helps  all of you Fire ant haters out there. You can always call us if you have any questions or visit our website at www.Berrettpestcontrol.com
