Will My Pest Control Treatment Work If It’s Applied During a Texas Rain Storm?
This is a question we get all the time, the quick answer is that wet weather treatments can be just as effective as dry weather treatments. In fact in many cases a wet weather treatment can even be more effective. For Example Steve Cisneros, one of the owners of Berrett Pest Control, prefers his home in Allen, TX to be treated in wet weather conditions. Let me take a second and explain why.
First, we need to explain what is involved in both a typical dry weather treatment and a typical wet weather treatment.
Typical Dry Weather Treatments
- Inspection of home and property
- Sweeping of eaves for spider webs and wasp nests
- 4-6 feet barrier power sprayed around foundation of home
- Spraying of entry points i.e. doorways and window sills
- Wall injection, insecticidal dust is injected into weep holes and other cracks
- Spot treat the yard as necessary for fire ants or other bugs
- Power spray perimeter fence line
Again this is a typical treatment; however since every home is different, your home may maybe treated differently depending on specific issues concerning your home.
Typical Wet Weather Treatments
- Inspection of home and property
- Sweeping of eaves for spider webs and wasps nests
- 1-2 feet barrier sprayed around foundation of home
- 4-10 feet barrier granulated around foundation of home
- Spraying of entry points i.e. doorways and window sills
- Wall injection, insecticidal dust is injected into weep holes and other cracks
- Spot treat yard as necessary for fire ants or other bugs
- Granulate around perimeter fence line
You can see that the two typical treatments are almost identical, so why does the owner like his home treated in wet weather? There are a few reasons, first bugs flee from the yard during heavy rains and seek out shelter. They can usually find shelter in cracks and crevices around the home which is exactly where the insecticidal dust is injected. Second, many insects live under a layer of grass clippings called thatch in the yard. One of the reasons we power spray is to help penetrate this layer of thatch. However, granules (which are activated by water and need water to be effective) are able to penetrate through the thatch into the soil where ants, earwigs, roaches, and other bugs like to nest.
There are exceptions of course if your yard is flooded or has 6 inches of snow on it than its safe to say that your home doesn’t need to be treated on that day. On the other hand, moisture can invite bugs therefore, as soon as the yard dries up a treatment would be recommended.
